Water PH in Alternative Photo Processes

Water PH is mentioned fairly often in the literature for alt photographic processes.  The mention is usually for the water to be neutral (PH 7) or acidic (below PH 7).

I’ve not been happy with the darkness (Dmax) of the blue in my Cyanotypes.  I thought I would check my water and some other water sources.  What I found surprised me.

My well water through a softner tested at PH 7.  Our local water softner business sells municipal water that they treat with a reverse osmosis process and it tested PH 6.  I tested some Walmart one gal distilled water (Great Value brand at $.83 per gal) and it was below PH 5 as the testing method did not go below PH 5.

So, any of these should work with my Cyanotypes and I had been using the Walmart water to develop my prints.  I just ordered a PH meter to continue to control this possible variable.

Any thoughts or comments appreciated.
